'We thought it was a good idea, after a year and a half of misery, not to start immediately with the most critical perspective, but rather to emphasise how good it was to be together again.'
In this podcast, Marijn Lems and Wijbrand Schaap look back with Guy Weizman at his 'State of the Theatre', the traditional opening of the theatre season. Weizman surprised the audience present at the Dutch Theatre Festival with a loving overture by the full ensemble of NITE, each of whom shouted into the microphone how good it was to be back together live.
Then Weizman went into depth, and how. 'For me, the biggest question was which topics I didn't want to talk about. I felt it was important not to make empty statements. Normally, I get to put my opinions and views on stage in a way that is arti0stical, and different from what a journalist does.'
Weizman addressed the cancellation culture from a very personal motive: 'What I like most about the cultural sector is that it is full of people who want to improve the world. I try my best to make a world a little more positive than the one I see around me. In that effort, I am afraid we are so afraid of making mistakes that we end up not daring to say anything. There are also people who don't want to work with me because, as a Jewish Moroccan, I am from Israel. I find that very painful.'
