World-renowned writer and sociologist Édouard Louis is coming to the Explore the North festival in Leeuwarden in November. The French writer is known for his highly personal, autobiographical novels about, among other things, his family, his homosexuality in a homophobic environment, racism and growing up from the working class in northern France. In 2014, Édouard Louis broke Down with Eddy Bellegueule. This year, the final and sixth volume of this (family) series entitled The downfall. Édouard Louis' work is translated, filmed and, in particular, translated into plays worldwide.
Explore the North's festival weekend takes place at various locations in Leeuwarden city centre on Friday 21, Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 November. Édouard Louis will visit Leeuwarden on Sunday 23 November. Earlier, the arrival of Joost Oomen, the Poezieboys, Pitou & LUWTEN & Naaz, Saartje van Camp and aja monet, among others, was announced. This programme around Édouard Louis is a collaboration between Explore the North and ILFU (International Literature Festival Utrecht). The writer will also be seen on Monday 24 November at Stadsschouwburg Utrecht, organised by ILFU.

About the programme
Édouard Louis joins Explore the North and ILFU in conversation with fellow writer and friend Raoul de Jong. Naturally, they will discuss Louis' new novel The downfall and look back at all parts of the family project. Based on visual fragments and readings by actors, all the major themes of Édouard Louis' work will pass by. We expect a special evening, with a frank discussion of his entire oeuvre, enriched with footage of the theatrical adaptations made of it.

About Édouard Louis
Young writer and sociologist Édouard Louis (b. 1992) was born Eddy Bellegueule. Ever since the release of his debut novel, he became one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation. He wrote the bestsellers Down with Eddy Bellegueule, History of violence, They killed my father, Struggle and metamorphosis of a woman and Change: Method. His books are being adapted for theatre worldwide. In November, the book The downfall at De Bezige Bij. This new work deals with the death of his brother and is the last of the six in his work about his family.
