Saturday, June 14, went off in a flood of evening gowns, dinner jackets, Dutch celebrities and Gooische Tanks War Horse premiered. A play about a war in which the Netherlands was neutral, and of which there are memorial stones in every village in the rest of the world. You can go and see it. Or not. The Letterkundig Museum misses the essence of Toonder's art with its 'Double Thinking' exhibition on the life and work of Marten Toonder.

The exhibition does look beautifully stylised, and follows Toonder's life and work chronologically. There is a booth in the shape of a ship at the beginning - Toonder's father was a captain and took American comics for his sons, which inspired Toonder as a child - and at the end a booth hidden in a big fat typical Toonder-...
