LKCA: First estimate: corona damage cultural associations already at least 12 million

The damage caused by the corona crisis to cultural associations, such as music societies and choirs, is already expected to be at least €12 million. This is according to an initial survey conducted last week by KNMO, Choir network Netherlands, Council of 12 and LKCA.
In the cultural sector, sector-wide impact assessments are currently being carried out and presented to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The aim is to see whether the proposed support measures for the cultural sector are sufficient, or whether adjustments are needed.
Over 5,000 people, the vast majority of whom were association administrators, completed the questionnaire in four days. But when the questionnaire was completed, it was not yet known that the ban on events would be extended until June 1. As a result, the damage to associations is expected to increase much further because now the numerous passion concerts and activities around 75 years of freedom will also not go ahead.

Consequences of cancellations

Amateur arts associations and other initiatives have massively implemented the cabinet's measures against the corona virus. All associations have stopped their rehearsals, classes, concerts and events. This directly affects a large group of artistic supervisors and teachers. Some can continue to be paid, while others cannot. Currently, more than half of the associations are suffering losses.

Not only associations

However, the total costs for the amateur sector are much higher still, as associations are only part of the amateur arts sector. Many singers, musicians and other practitioners unite through foundations, project-based initiatives or in informal associations. Loss of income for artistic professionals, teachers and businesses in this part of the sector is added to the estimated costs. As is the cost of cancelling festivals, events and competitions.
