The NUT brings Cloth of Blood: a shabby piece of art

The musical tragicomedy Cloth for bleeding confronts the audience with poverty in a raw and humorous way. And lays bare how we as a society deal with it; feelings of guilt and well-meaning help, but also counterproductive approaches and a superficial view of people and the problem.

In the show, five actors compete with the best of intentions for your compassion and pity. Not for themselves, but for poor, homeless William. His tragic life and suffering are translated into a story with the aim of saving him. But is it ethical to exhibit this poverty? Or is it at the expense of the dignity of the person whose story is being told?

Cloth for bleeding balances on the border between theatre and reality. It is an examination of the responsibility of artists, audiences and society. Join this sharp narrative about the true and often absurd stories of people living in poverty. Can we really change anything? Perhaps. But we promise nothing.

The show can be seen at Podium Hoge Woerd in Utrecht for three weeks from 4 September and will tour the country in the autumn. Cloth for bleeding is a co-production of the NUT and George Tobal Productions.

Dinner 'An apple and an egg'

From 4 to 21 September, Doekje voor het bloeden will be at Podium Hoge Woerd. True to NUT tradition, we will offer a three-course dinner to accompany this. Good and honest food, entirely in the theme of the evening.

Chef Eylien Lommen (LEF - Let's Explore Food): "The menu is inspired by an apple and an egg. Traditionally food for the poor. We cook as much as possible with simple and unpretentious products."

The Giftshop

Travelling with the theatre show is The Gift Shop. This is a museum shop selling art, but not just any art. Six people share with us the intimate and vulnerable story of their debt. Illustrator and designer Mart Veldhuis, who paid off his student debt with the sale of his tapestry Eigen Schuld (Own Debt), has created a number of artworks from each story. When buying such an artwork, you pay off a little debt from the person the work is about.
