Podcast: This is how to freshen up the opening of a poetry festival. Poetry International Rotterdam successfully deploys rejuvenation.

The lectern. The lectern. The paper holder, if possible with its own light, which, shining upwards, draws stern shadows of the reading glasses on the poet's face. It is the kind of necessary evil that every poetry or literature festival has to deal with. Only the powerpoint is missing to make it a boring seed onion conference. Poetry International Festival Rotterdam has in...

Venice Biennale emphasises soft forces in art

The 57th Venice Biennale brings the world together and the art world to Venice. This year, the biennial art event is bigger than ever. Here you will find out what is 'trending' in contemporary art. Everyone thinks something of this event and we live in a time when everything and everyone is held up against the yardstick: 'Have you been there?....

It's not America here... or is it? #WN17 #WU17

©Marc Brester/AQM Is this the real life? Olga Neuwirth: Weltkatzenmusik or acoustic preservation? #HF16

Austrian politician Jörg Haider labelled its work Weltkatzenmusik. When his far-right Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs joined the government in 2000, it led to mass protests. At one such rally, Olga Neuwirth (Graz, 1968), under the title 'Ich lass mich nicht wegjodeln', denounced his anti-intellectual and anti-cultural agenda. The rest is history: Haider drove himself to pieces in 2008, Neuwirth...

Modern panoramas at Mesdag don't make the old fade away

Although Panorama Mesdag always focuses on one painting, it is not a static museum. Changing exhibitions sometimes highlight Mesdag and his time, sometimes more modern artistic expressions. This time, the museum has approached artists to develop new visions on the concept of the panorama. A laudable decision. Whether the new panoramas are all equally convincing is a second. The main work in the exhibition is...

Monks and hippies in search of enlightenment

Among the dozens of film festivals in this country, there is one that forms a small island of tranquillity and contemplation. The Buddhist Film Festival Europe, now in its 10th year, is a multi-day festival with, about and by Buddhists, or Buddhist-inspired. Now that everyone is all mindful, we go back to the source with festival director

Dutch Film Special (3): Beauty film, eh! Dutch in Toronto

How is Dutch film doing beyond its borders? Just before the Dutch Film Festival breaks loose, its big international brother in Toronto (TIFF) kicked off. Red carpets, big stars and ditto premieres. It may be slightly less well-known here than Cannes, but TIFF is at least as important. For example, in the run-up to the Oscars. Not a bad thing, then...

Chinese animation art between experiment and tradition at Holland Animation Film Festival

Dit heeft u nog niet eerder gezien: stop-motionanimatie met figuren van Chinees porselein. In de korte film Mr Sea heeft de Chinese kunstenares Xue Geng een oude legende over een ontdekkingsreiziger, een prostituee en een slang
brought to life with home-fired ceramics. A glossy, dreamlike depiction of eroticism and violence.
Mr Sea maakt deel uit van het openingsprogramma waarmee woensdag het Holland Animation Film Festival (18-22 maart) in Utrecht van start gaat.
