On Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 May, the VSCD met, and the Congres Podiumkunsten (@congresPK) was going on at the Nijmegen Concert Hall De Vereeniging. I went to check it out and discovered some new things.
Things have changed in Dutch theatre since the beginning of this century. Somewhere around the year 2000, I was a guest at a meeting of the Association of Theatre and Concert Hall Directors, and it was a bizarre experience. I found myself among a gathering that could best be described as a gentlemen's club, where the number of upstanding municipal officials exceeded the number of artistically inspired theatre lovers.

Het zou zo mooi zijn geweest: Het Nationale Ballet samen met De Nationale Opera in Het Nationale Theater, zoals je dat in de hoofdstad van elk zichzelf respecterend land hebt. Maar dat is dus niet gebeurd. Het huis van onze Nationale Opera- en Balletclubs heet nu ‘Nationale Opera en Ballet’. Daar heeft het Nationale Toneel voor gezorgd, dat net als het Nederlands Dans Theater niet in onze hoofdstad Amsterdam zit, maar in de residentie Den Haag.
Het Holland Festival brengt dit jaar de bijzondere Frans-Algerijnse co-productie Nya, waarin verworvenheden van de moderne en klassieke dans worden gecombineerd met hiphop en bovendien de Bolero van Ravel klinkt naast de Algerijnse evergreens van Houria Aïchi.
