The Tryater performance Swimbad with its unique play location, unusual theme and diverse cast, is attracting a lot of interest early on. A month before the try-outs, the entire series is at half-sold out.

Surreal concrete

Swimbad plays in and around Bakkeveen's outdoor swimming pool, among the greenery and with the full ambiance of an ordinary day at the pool. The cast, including Joke Tjalsma, Karel Hermans, Marjolein Ley, Anna Raadsveld and Gerwin de Vries, moves in, on and next to the water. Together, they mirror the life of protagonist Swaantsje (Joke Tjalsma), an elderly woman who has been connected to the place for years and sees different stages of her development as a woman reflected in the other actors. This makes it a sometimes surreal but, due to the location, also concrete performance, in which there is always a lot to see and experience.

Best side

The premiere is on 22 May; the show plays until mid-June. The venue is already being fully transformed into a performance venue (while regular swimmers can go about their business). Meanwhile, rehearsals have moved from Tryater's own theatre hall in Leeuwarden to Bakkeveen. Meanwhile, the performance is already proving quite appealing to fans. Artistic director Tatiana Pratley: ‘That we are already seeing the stands so betiid folrinnen sjogge, jout betrouwen. Blykber reitsje we in string by it publyk. It reflektearret ek ús eigen gefoel omdat it rint allegear goed: de spilers ha der nocht oan, de technyk rint als it spoar en it waar sit oant ta bot mei. Mei dit ferhaal oer generaasjes en ûntwikkeling, brocht op in prachtige lokaasje dy't tematysk en sfearfol wurket, lit Tryater him wat me oanbelanget ek fan syn bêste kant sjen.’

Jubilee for Oerol

With Swimbad Tryater will close its anniversary season, during which the organisation will celebrate its 60th anniversary. Since September - the start of the theatre season and the month the company was founded in 1965 - Tryater has been celebrating in various ways. The jubilee book Tryater spilet (publisher Afûk) is still widely available, including at Swimbad. Following this location performance, Tryater travels to Terschelling for the Oerol Festival: there it plays The other side. Ticket sales for this will start in May.
