Space for literature on stage, Frisian language and for young (northern) creators

Production house Explore the North from Leeuwarden crosses over to Terschelling with a ship full of makers showing new work and work in development within the Explore the North Hub at Oerol. From 18 to 21 June, within the Explore the North Hub you will see the work of Kruidkoek & Joost Oomen, Drie Dagen Fris, MAHA, Alexander Moto, Mees van Rijswijk, Johannes Lievens/Martha!tentative. In addition, the Young Writers are also coming to the island with new work. Oerol and Explore the North thus make room for all kinds of ‘literature on stage’. With this collaboration, they offer various (young) northern and national artists the opportunity to introduce themselves to an adventurous audience at an early stage. Tickets are available from 15 May at 20:00 via oerol.nl.

Kruidkoek & Joost Oomen - Unique mix of punk jazz and poetry

Sunday 21 June | 3.45pm | the Deining: the Valley |. More info

Kruidkoek & Joost Oomen bring a unique blend of punk jazz, poetry and anything you can imagine dancing to. The four members of Kruidkoek form a solid foundation over which Joost Oomen whips up the audience with his loud, ironic poetry. The result? A dance party where people throw oranges at a gong, shoot each other with bananas and shout “Saw, pudding, pudding, saw” at the highest volume (but never louder than Joost). This autumn, the show can also be seen in various venues across the country.

New work in small theatre

The beautiful and intimate West-End theatre features new work and work in development by Drie Dagen Fris and Mees van Rijswijk, from Explore the North's production house. In addition, Explore the North presents shows by MAHA and Alexander Moto here.

Three Days Fresh

Friday 19 June | 8pm & 10pm | West End Theatre | West End Theatre More info

Dutch/Flemish collective Drie Dagen Fris opens the doors of their literary pop laboratory. They solidify a text, attempt alien beats and drill for meaning. Mees van Rijswijk, Marieke Ornelis and Johannes Lievens write and sing about consumption, work, dead writers, heartbreak and hunger (in the backstage area). A literary investigation you can dance to.

Mees van Rijswijk & Explore the North - AAAARGH

Sunday 21 June | 2pm & 4pm | West End Theatre | West End Theatre More info
Mees van Rijswijk shows visitors during a try-out version of the show AAAARGH lands in a musical spoken word performance about an abrasive search for anger. It is not a manual, not a therapy, not a safe space. It's not even a word. AAAARGH is a radical attempt to stay soft precisely through rock hard resistance. The show can also be seen at Theatre Festival De Parade this summer.

MAHA

Saturday 20 June | 8pm, 9pm & 10pm | West End Theatre | West End Theatre More info

MAHA does not bring a standard concert, but a platform for stories beyond the mainstream. Thus, with abrasive lyrics and punky bass lines, she makes a powerful fist of resistance, shaped by her experiences as a black female Muslim. At the same time, she manages to cast heavy themes in an energetic and catchy format.

Alexander Moto

Saturday 20 June | 2pm & 4pm | West End Theatre | West End Theatre More info

Alexander Moto brings (partly Frisian-language) hip-hop without concessions to the West End Theatre. For years, he has made music in all kinds of styles and art in many forms. Where he embraces his versatility, it also gnaws at times. As an artist in your mid-twenties, you naturally say ‘yes’ to every opportunity, but what if you did channel and go back to that where you really found yourself? Back to hip-hop. Hip-hop in Moto's definition.

Night-long, feverish search for footing

Johannes Lievens / Martha!tentative - Only a miracle

Thursday 18 June | 6.45 pm & 9 pm | BT. Forest Theatre | More info
At Only a miracle Flemish writer and theatre-maker Johannes Lievens tells of someone saved by a kiwi plant, someone nipped by five figures and someone whose life was changed by an encounter at the foot of the Himalayas. Together with drummer Orlan Ghekiere, Johannes is feverishly on a journey, night after night, looking for footing.

Stories about places on the island you thought you knew

Young Writers - Greetings

Friday 19 & Saturday 20 June | 7.45pm | the Deining: the Tribe pub |. More info

In March, the Young Writers travelled to Terschelling and let themselves be touched by three special places on the island. These impressions formed the basis for new, poetic texts that will be presented during Oerol in Jonge Schrijvers - Jonge Schrijvers. Greetings. Get carried away by their readings and experience the island as they experienced it this spring. This project stems from the Young Writers teaching programme (age 14-18) of Meeuw young theatre makers and Explore the North and is in collaboration with Oerol.
