APlace: Performing arts sector calls for an integrated vision

The Dutch Association for Performing Arts (NAPK) identifies structural bottlenecks in the organisation of the performing arts sector.

In a new analysis of the system, which was presented today during a NAPK Uitgelicht meeting at Theater Utrecht, the professional association advocates for an integrated approach to policy and funding across the entire chain.

The analysis maps the interdependencies between amateur art, art education, creators, producers, and venues. According to the NAPK, this coherence is insufficiently reflected in the current system of subsidies, policy, and implementation.

The organisation identifies bottlenecks such as fragmented governance between government levels and funds, declining local infrastructure, a vulnerable transition from education to professional practice, and a funding model that offers little stability. These factors reinforce each other and limit the scope for development for both creators and institutions.
