Korzo Theatre The Hague

The-Black-Piece

The Black Piece. The preview. The debrief.

At some performances, you groan inwardly whether it will all work out. With other performances, you groan that it will turn out so well. The Black Piece is the latter. Ann Van den Broek's latest production was created with input from dancers and test audiences. Then it can hardly go wrong. The preview shows a penetrating mix of versions of the term black. As if you, the audience, are forced to stand in front of a fogged-up mirror where the haze slowly rises...

Kylián Festival. 8 ways to stay on top as a choreographer

Jiří Kylián is not at the Holland Festival. He has his own festival. The small Korzo theatre hosted ten days of intimate works by the great choreographer. Varied and still impressive. Next year, Kylián will have been a choreographer for 45 years. How do you keep performing at the world's top for so long?

Ironing or hitting

It will be hard to choose how we will musically fill our next weekend: will we stay in Amsterdam for the Amsterdam Marimba Weekend, or travel to The Hague, where Dag in de Branding is entirely dedicated to the string quartet? In short: are we going to string or strike? For those who can't decide, check out Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Slagwerk Den Haag later this month - they just do both!

The Amsterdam Marimba Weekend runs from 9 to 11 May and is themed 'The Eastern Connection'. The...

5 ways to renew dance in 1 performance. Go OFFline in Korzo

As a museum, if you want to participate a little, you have to lead the audience through the presentation interactively. You should be able to do the same with dance, choreographer Amos Ben-Tal must have thought with his project OFFline. He shows 5 ways. In a performance.

1. start differently
The much-used formula of 'sit in your chair and watch a performance' is immediately jettisoned at OFFline by dance collective OFFPROJECTS. At first, you walk through various spaces of the Korzo theatre and get to work ...

New choreographer award from BNG Culture Fund

The Netherlands has added a new award for young choreographic talent. The BNG Culture Fund, in collaboration with Korzo in The Hague, has established the BNG Bank Excellent Talent Dance Award, provisionally for a period of three years. Dance in the Netherlands is a thriving sector, in which many beautiful and surprising things happen. Due to budget cuts, much of this is in danger of being lost. One production house after another is dying or its very existence is threatened. The new award, which offers production e...

Young Talent Performance (Fugaz Floor)

Talent development new buzzword in dance world: 3 encouraging initiatives

The fact that it is difficult to get a job after graduation is also well known in the dance world. Therefore, partly at the government's insistence, companies are focusing on talent development. They also hope for a better connection with schools. Young dancers are now more likely to be on the front line of ballet: the theatre, and that is good news for audiences. Because the energy is fresh and the level has advanced considerably.

Whether a better connection between school and company is really going to solve all the problems is no...

Oppressive (audience) manipulation in The Red Piece

'Don't let anyone leave the room without having experienced or felt something.' That is surely and surely the mission with Flemish Ann Van den Broek's work. If the mood swings in The Red Piece don't do much to you, your retinas will burn out from the changes in lighting design. You might just think you are being manipulated as an audience. But you gladly allow it.

Anna Mikhailova: 'Black Perfume is about addiction and fear'

Amsterdam, 10-12-2012 - Last weekend saw the start of the Babel Festival at the Ostadetheater, an initiative of the Diamantfabriek. Founded two years ago, this production group offers young makers the chance to develop small-scale musical theatre. This weekend sees the premiere of Black Perfume, by Russian composer Anna Mikhailova and Dutch director Annechien Koerselman, based on Mikhail Bulgakov's story Morphine.
Mikhailova (Moscow, 1984) studied with the notorious Tichon Chren...
