On 21 December, Jetse Batelaan, director at Artemis, will give a lecture at the Trippenhuis in Amsterdam. Using visual clips, he will show his development as a theatre maker and share the insights he gained in the process: from his initial discomfort with drama and conflict to his conviction that it is important to let children and adolescents experience panic in the context of theatre.
About Jetse Batelaan
Jetse Batelaan has been artistic director of Theatre Artemis since 2013. Here, he creates sensational performances with a philosophical or absurdly comic slant and evocative titles such as "Only like sawdust does a tree get applause" or "A cowboy with his hands high probably doesn't cheer". Batelaan graduated from the directing course at the Academie voor Theater en Dans in Amsterdam in 2003 and subsequently worked at gasthuis Theater in Amsterdam, theatre group MAX and the Ro Theater. He received the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2019 and the ITI award in 2020.

The lecture is part of the of Out of Art lectures by the Academy of Arts, a society of leading artists from a variety of disciplines. In this series, new members of the Academy of Arts are given free rein to give a lecture at the Trippenhuis. They do this based on their own work on themes that are at the forefront of it. Jetse Batelaan joined the Academy of Arts this year. After his lecture on 21 December, lectures by visual artist Jan Dibbets (expected: 18 January) and harpist Lavinia Meijer (expected: 8 February) will follow in this series.
