Zuiveringshal Oost on the Westergas grounds will host the opening of Amsterdam in Motion on Monday 27 October 2025: the multimedia story of Amsterdam in a thematic show about past, present and future. This cultural project, a collaboration between initiator Duncan Stutterheim (Westergas) and the Amsterdam Museum, has been made possible by a broad coalition of Amsterdam partners. It is a gift from Amsterdammers to Amsterdam.
A festive gathering on the city's official 750th anniversary marked the moment when Mayor Femke Halsema accepted this lasting gift on behalf of the birthday of Amsterdam. "Amsterdam in Motion is one of the most impressive legacies of Amsterdam 750 years - a wonderful permanent gift to the city to mark a historic anniversary year." said Sietse Bakker, director Amsterdam 750. From Tuesday 28 October, Amsterdam in Motion will be open to the public daily. Tickets for this city experience are now available via Amsterdaminmotion.nl.
Amsterdam in Motion: presentation

Besides an overwhelming, audiovisual show on a gigantic maquette of 30,500 buildings, Amsterdam in Motion also offers, on the upper floor, an interactive exhibition. Show and exhibition share the same mission: they aim to show the city in all its facets. Whereas the maquette visualises history and current dynamics in a 15-minute time travel, the upper floor looks to the future from the present: how Amsterdammers, businesses and governments are making choices about sustainability, housing, diversity and liveability each time. The approach on this floor, an interactive orientation, invites visitors to discover their own role in the development of the city.
Amsterdam in Motion: education

Amsterdam in Motion offers a comprehensive education programme for school classes and students, with tours and workshops in a specially equipped education room. The aim is to get young people thinking about history and their role in the city's future, and to actively connect them to themes such as sustainability, migration and innovation.
Amsterdam in Motion: creation

"Amsterdam in Motion is a story about Amsterdam AND Amsterdammers, about a city that is never finished, innovatively told and developed by a wonderful team of creative parties. The digital concept and projection design of Amsterdam in Motion were developed by digital creative agency Monks. Fiction Factory and Phanta Vision built the multimedia maquette. And the technical realisation and audiovisual production of the upstairs presentation were provided by concept, consultancy and design agency for the cultural sector, XPEX.", says Judikje Kiers, director of the Amsterdam Museum. Together with partners, the Amsterdam Museum developed the content of the model show and the interactive exhibition. Amsterdam in Motion is in line with the museum's role as a city museum: telling stories about Amsterdam's past, present and future. From the opening, the museum will also run the exhibition.
Amsterdam in Motion was made possible by a broad coalition of partners, including Westergas Vastgoed C.V., Familie Stutterheim, Hartwig Foundation, JCDecaux, Rabobank Amsterdam, Port of Amsterdam and Phanta Vision. And XPEX, ORAM, Amports, BPD Cultuurfonds, Fiction Factory, Dell, Scenexus, Capgemini, AMFI, Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, Hogeschool van Amsterdam, NWO, Maeson, Epson, MassiveMusic, Gemeente Amsterdam, Stichting Zabawas, Amsterdam 750, IJsfontein, Shosho, Total Design, Triply, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Arcam, NEMO and many others. Together, they facilitated the creation of a permanent, accessible project that reflects the pride, creativity and power of change of the city.
Youth gets free entry
JCDecaux, founding partner of the project, is offering everyone under 18 free access to Amsterdam in Motion. Managing Director Hannelore Majoor: "JCDecaux is keen to give the city a lasting gift with social relevance in honour of its 750th anniversary. Together with Amsterdam in Motion, we want to pay tribute to Amsterdam, the city with which we have been so closely associated for 40 years. And after all, young people hold the future in their hands, also of this city, which is why we are offering free entry to all visitors under 18."
