This November, the Square Theatre is the meeting place for dance lovers! With four different programmes, we will show the versatility of modern dance, ranging from adventurous performances to intimate stories. We start the month with two multidisciplinary Triple Bills, performed and curated by young, promising makers. And from 13 to 17 November, we present a tribute to dance pioneer Pauline de Groot with an exhibition, talks and performances! Dance and imagination are not lacking for young audiences either. Plein Theater offers a stage to both young makers and experienced performers, explicitly leaving room for experimentation and innovation. Plein Theater is a leading presentation venue for makers operating outside the mainstream, often from diverse and non-dominant cultures.
Friday, November 1: Melted Room
The month starts strong with Melted Room, a captivating mix of dance, live music and electronica. This performance takes the audience on a journey where dreams and reality merge. The evening consists of three pieces: A Bubbles' Dress, in which fantasy and reality blur; There is this girl, which celebrates the power of friendship and breaking boundaries; and Rite of Rumi, a ritual inspired by the full moon. Expect an evening of transformation, inner rhythms and the power of the collective, with performances by Catarina Paiva, Kanoko Takeuchi, Lisa Schreiber, Xabier Oruesagasti and Xico Ribas.
Saturday 2 November: Iridescence - sharing transformative, intimate female narratives
On 2 November, queer and non-binary choreographer Robin Nimanong presents Iridescence, an evening in which the three female artists Leyla de Muynck, Goda Žukauskaitė and Qiyun Zheng share their intimate and transformative stories. Their work explores themes of transformation, body and identity. Nimanong will be supported for the next two years through Fonds Podiumkunsten's New Makers Scheme. This will allow them to delve further into queer theory and strengthen their dance language in relation to their Thai background. For this, Nimanong is supported by Plein Theatre, among others.
Saturday 9 November: A place very secret (3+)
For the youngest theatre lovers, there is A place very secret, an enchanting performance with dance for children aged 3 and up. Oona Minoo takes the audience into a world full of imagination, where castles, tree houses and other secret places come to life. This imaginative performance stimulates children's imagination and playfully introduces them to art and dance.
Wednesday 13 to Sunday 17 November: Performing the Archive - Pauline de Groot
From 13 to 17 November, we honour influential Dutch dance pioneer Pauline de Groot with a special programme. Performing the Archive offers presentations by choreographers Antonia Steffens and Elisa Zuppini, based on research into De Groot's rich archive. Besides dance performances, there will also be talks on De Groot's artistic legacy, with contributions from different generations of artists. The accompanying exhibition showcases rare material from the archive, from posters to video footage. On 13 November, the exhibition will be festively opened with the launch of De Groot's personal archive website and a book launch.
