On tour of Dutch theatres - for young and old from 6 years old

After a successful premiere in spring 2024 and performances for more than 1,600 children at primary schools in and around Utrecht, the light and loving family show attracts Grandma Final Boss, produced by the NUT (text: Floor Leene, direction: Lara van Hoof), now touring the Netherlands. This extraordinary performance about mourning, memories and love makes a difficult subject discussable in a light-hearted and accessible way, for both young and old.

At Grandma Final Boss we follow Orpheus, a boy who gambles and drinks lemonade with his grandma Izzy every Wednesday afternoon. But when grandma suddenly dies, Orpheus dives away into his favourite video game 'The Underworld of Hades'. As he plays level after level, the virtual world and reality begin to become increasingly intertwined. This is not just any game: Orpheus faces an exciting journey in which he must both defeat mythical monsters and accept his grief.

The show is a contemporary adaptation of the Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice, but from a child's perspective. With a mix of humour, warmth and fantasy handles Grandma Final Boss themes of mourning, saying goodbye and the power of memories. Accessible for children as young as 6, but with enough depth to touch adult audiences too.

Alongside the performance, a special game has been developed by HKU Game Design students, in which players can put themselves in Orpheus' shoes and have to overcome obstacles in the underworld. The game offers a unique, interactive way to experience the story and is perfect to play together with the whole family.

Grandma Final Boss in the press

"The story of Orpheus, with all its complex mythology and reflections on life and death, is appropriately shaped for this young audience. The core message of the myth remains intact: sometimes people die, and accepting that is and remains difficult." - Iris Spanbroek, Theaterkrant
