Theatre Rotterdam provides a platform for the creators of tomorrow

Adam Khazhmuradov, Hendrickx Ntela and Ciro Monoarfa Goudsmit will be presenting their works-in-progress from 14 to 17 October during Welcome to Our Guesthouse.

From Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 October, Theater Rotterdam will be presenting the tenth edition of Welcome to Our Guesthouse. This year, Adam Khazhmuradov, Hendrickx Ntela and Ciro Monoarfa Goudsmit have been selected for the annual artist-in-residence programme. For one month, they will be given the opportunity to to explore, exchange ideas and share their work with the public. During Welcome to Our Guesthouse they share their works-in-progress.

Room for development

For new and emerging artists, the opportunity to experiment is essential. Theater Rotterdam therefore does not commission artists to present a finished product, but instead offers them time, facilities and artistic freedom to explore, exchange ideas and try out new forms. The fact that there is such a great demand for this is also evident from the nearly 320 applications received for the open call.

Artistic coordinator Erik Kaiel: “The number of creators we’ve reached through the open call is fantastic, but at the same time it sends a clear message: spaces like this are desperately needed!”

New creators

This year, you’ll be introduced to three artists, each with their own artistic practice. The Brussels-based Krump choreographer Hendrickx Ntela explores how emptiness can make way for gentleness and nuance. Ciro Monoarfa Goudsmit is a vibrationalist who builds DIY musical instruments. Using sound and frequencies, he creates immersive performances exploring memory, trauma and colonial consciousness. Rotterdam-based dance maker Adam Khazhmuradov uses bodies and light to decolonise our experience of theatre and make space for neurodivergent ways of perceiving the world.

A night to discover what’s next 

Welcome to Our Guesthouse is the artist-in-residence programme through which Theater Rotterdam provides a platform for new developments in the arts. This year, too, the programme is presented as a ‘track’: TR8 on William Boothlaan is transformed into a vibrant landscape full of new work, surprising installations, contextual programmes and encounters. Following a theatrical route, the audience moves through the building, from one creator to the next.
