An immersive performance about grief, female anger, resistance and the quest for justice

What happens when you don’t suppress your anger, but use it as fuel for justice? In SHRINE Theatre maker Khadija El Kharraz Alami creates a parallel world full of song, movement and rituals, in which feminine powers unfold. Following the premiere at DE SINGEL in Antwerp and the Dutch premiere during the SPRING Performing Arts Festival in Utrecht, SHRINE To be performed in Rotterdam, Brussels, Amsterdam and The Hague during the 2026/2027 season. A young woman has lost her mother to violence and injustice. For years, she has been trying to seek justice through official channels; she takes the State to court, but loses. Her anger becomes a driving force for justice. She decides to take a stand against the systems she believes are responsible for the injustice.

On her flight into the desert, she encounters Jinns: supernatural beings who live in a parallel world to our own. They are expecting her and offer her refuge in their SHRINE, a sanctuary where her grief, anger and mourning are embraced and given space.

In this world, people remember, pray, sing and celebrate. She is carried forward by the generations of women who came before her: her mother, grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

SHRINE is a compelling performance about grief, anger, resistance and the strength we find in those who came before us. Through song, movement and ritual, Khadija El Kharraz Alami invites you into another world – and asks the question: What happens when we take justice into our own hands?

Inspiration

For SHRINE El Kharraz Alami drew inspiration from the work of the writer and activist Silvia Federici. In Caliban and the Witch Federici examines how the rise of capitalism has changed women’s position and our view of the body. SHRINE links these ideas to female ancestors, jinn, spirituality and rituals, and asks the question: what knowledge and ways of living together have we lost along the way, and which of these can we bring back to life?
