A major retrospective of the work of Fernando Botero (1932) is on show at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, entitled Botero: Celebrate Life! The rush of opening such an exhibition takes energy out of him, but strangely enough painting never exhausts him, he says in his studio in Monaco. 'I have never experienced anything more fulfilling than painting or sculpting. Painting takes you out of everyday reality. You forget your body - even your existence. It's intense, but while painting I don't feel any fatigue, even after working for seven or eight hours. Whereas at a cocktail party, I am exhausted after only half an hour.'

Wie gaat vanavond naar huis met de C. Buddingh’-Prijs, de bekroning voor het beste Nederlandstalige dichtdebuut van het afgelopen jaar? Dat wordt vanavond bekendgemaakt op Poetry International. A Quattro Mani doet een voorspelling.
Het belooft een prachtig portret te worden, de film die regisseur John Albert Jansen aan het maken is over dichter Remco Campert. Poetry International (van 7 t/m 11 juni in Rotterdam) vertoont alvast een voorproefje. ‘Ik vind het ontroerend te zien dat er bij Remco nog altijd sprake is van een zekere verlegenheid, alsof het jongetje nog altijd onder de oppervlakte verborgen zit. Dat komt heel mooi in beeld.’
Is de taal van poëzie nog vrij van ideologie en manipulatie? Of is het onzin om te denken dat dichterlijke taal zich onttrekt aan framing, het ideologisch laden van woorden? Dat is dit jaar het hoofdthema van poëziefestival Poetry International, dat op dinsdag 7 juni van start gaat.
Zijn roman Het wonderbaarlijke voorval met de hond in de nacht, met de innemende autistische jongen Christopher in de hoofdrol, maakte de Britse schrijver Mark Haddon (1962) in één klap tot publiekslieveling. In zijn eerste verhalenbundel De pier stort in toont hij zich opnieuw sterk in het beschrijven van mensen die net iets anders zijn dan de meesten, maar toch o zo herkenbaar in het dagelijks leven. Mededogen met de underdog, dat is waar het om draait.

Connie Palmen heeft maandagavond 9 mei de Libris Literatuur Prijs 2016 gewonnen met haar roman Jij zegt het. In de lange geschiedenis van deze literaire onderscheiding, die in 1994 voor het eerst werd uitgereikt, is Palmen pas de derde vrouw die het geldbedrag van € 50.000 en een bronzen legpenning in ontvangst mocht nemen.
