World premiere in Berlin of Dutch 3D experiment Above Us All by Eugenie Jansen

Contrary to what some expected a few years ago, 3D in artistic film is still a rarity. So then, when something pops up in this corner again, it immediately makes one curious. Municipalities pass on most cuts to the arts

Culture cuts have now reached 450 million euros. The Lower House earlier decided on cuts of 200 million. The cut in the municipal budget by the same House of Representatives now leads to a further cut of 250 million euros. This is calculated by research firm Berenschot in a report which will be presented on Thursday 30 January in Rotterdam.

43rd Rotterdam Film Festival celebrates 25 years of Hubert Bals Fund with opening film Qissa

9,000 euros was the amount with which Indian director Anup Singh's Qissa got off the ground a decade ago. That money came from the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) affiliated Hubert Bals Fund (HBF), which has been supporting filmmakers in developing countries for 25 years now. Last night, Qissa opened the 43rd edition of the Rotterdam festival. This makes the port city world capital for independent film for ten days, as business director Janneke Starink stated at the opening in the Doelen.

Show with substance is like good sex with a storyteller

 "A good book is a man seducing me is like sex with a stranger." Anne Provoost, the securely Flemish-talking essayist managed to shake P.F. Thomése and Hermamn Koch for a moment. In a debate at Writers Unlimited, she made a plea for the not-true story, and did so in a metaphor that rather stirred the imagination. Through Facebook, writers return to origins #wu14

It's because of Facebook. Says Ton van de Langkruis, artistic director of writers' festival Writers Unlimited: "You can no longer be that anonymous figure bombarding the world with hermetic texts from a locked attic room. The market is no longer for it. Your main means of communication is facebook. There you have to be open to questions, you communicate with your readers. We are back in the village square where the first stories were once told."

Noreena Herz kukelt van voetstuk op Writers Unlimited

“Luister niet naar de experts, ze hebben het eigenlijk altijd mis.” De kern van ‘Eyes wide open’, het nieuwste boek van Noreena Hertz, is helder. Dat ze zelf deskundige is, en dat haar visie daarom ook gewantrouwd moet worden, is logisch. Dat het gesprek wat ze over dit onderwerp voerde met oud-politica Femke Halsema almaar bizarder werd, was niet zo logisch. Ronduit schokkend was de val die de schrik van alle bankiers ter wereld aan het eind maakte.

Artists' acquittal: March of Civilisation was civilised after all

Police cracked down on the March of Civilisation on 27 June 2011 in The Hague. The demonstration against art cuts, which was controversial because of its rather elitist naming, ended with a few charges by the ME on artists. Their friendly sit-in thereby degenerated into something that opponents of all those elitist subsidy slimmers (according to Martin Bosma of the PVV) were only too happy to see: violence.

Cinema attendance growth stagnates, Verliefd op Ibiza Dutch frontrunner

Christmas saved the 2013 cinema year. While it seemed to be nothing at the beginning of December in terms of cinema attendance, the last three weeks of the year made up for a lot - thanks to Hobbit 2.

Het slagveld van de kunst: 41 instellingen weg, 132 door zonder subsidie

De eerste balans van de kille sanering door Rutte 1 is er. Bussemaker stuurde hem naar de 1e kamer. In Nederland zijn 41 kunstinstellingen opgeheven, terwijl 132 andere clubs dapper volhouden zonder subsidie (en dus ook zonder personeel). Hoe lang deze firma’s op vrijwilligers door zullen draaien, is nog onbekend. Volgend jaar zullen we er vast een paar kunnen bijvoegen in het rijtje overledenen.

La Grande Bellezza and Borgman best films 2013 according to Dutch film press

Members of the Dutch Circle of Film Journalists (KNF) and other film critics reviewed the Italian tragicomedy La Grande Bellezza voted best cinematic film of 2013. According to the same critics, Borgman by Alex van Warmerdam the best Dutch film of this year, the KNF announced.

Update following audience question. Wilmar de Visser, double bass player with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, thought he had seen other figures at OCW, but when we checked, those figures turned out to be even worse than we already suspected here. Since it involves a breakdown across the classical and opera genre, here's the answer: "I checked, but you're throwing up your own glasses. The average number of visitors to opera and orchestras together (because you don't break down 2012) fell alarmingly in the Netherlands between 2011 and 2012. Namely from repectively 982 in 2011 to 729 in 2012. That's a drop of almost 25%."
