Het epos over Amerika in het AIDS-tijdperk een moderne klassieker noemen is een understatement. Sinds 1993 wordt het stuk overal ter wereld met veel succes opgevoerd. HBO maakte er een tegenvallende miniserie van, Péter Eötvös een volkomen mislukte opera. Toneelgroep Amsterdam vierde recentelijk tot in New York triomfen met een tot op het bot uitgekleede vijf uur durende versie, mede aanleiding voor ‘Meppel-gate’. Regisseur Marcus Azzin wacht al twintig jaar om zijn visie op dit theaterepos te geven en krijgt bij Oostpool nu de kans, met een cast met louter topacteurs.
