Dear Hans Teeuwen, art has nothing to fear from boring men.

It is a great thing that there are comedians who keep a finger on the pulse of society. Hans Teeuwen, for instance, has once again made himself angry. He has joined the small chorus of (mostly) men who see the end of the world coming because of a rebuttal. That is the rebuttal that now comes via social media

Film tip this week: Festival of short film Go Short goes online

The short film is the poetry of cinema. This statement by a Berlinale programmer is cited with approval by Go Short. This internationally highly regarded festival for short films - stepping stone for the Oscar and other awards - was supposed to have taken place in Nijmegen in early April. But, unsurprisingly, corona drew a line under it....

Comfort in times of Corona - Why adult animated films are so effective. (With Podcast)

Last year it was suddenly buzzing around: Dutch animation film is going to break through, a real animation industry has emerged. The occasion was the premiere of Heinz, Piet Kroon's whimsical and out-of-print film version of Windig and De Jong's comics. Not a children's film. And certainly not a Disney clone. We are talking about feature-length animated films, and there are many of those in the Netherlands....

The most important animation festival takes place in Annecy - and the Netherlands participates

I described here earlier that Dutch animation film is on the rise. And as I look around the animation festival in Annecy, France, this week, it seems nice to see how our animation filmmakers and producers are presenting themselves here. Especially since Annecy is considered the most important event worldwide in this sector. 'The Cannes of animation' I hear...

Dutch Film Special (3): Beauty film, eh! Dutch in Toronto

How is Dutch film doing beyond its borders? Just before the Dutch Film Festival breaks loose, its big international brother in Toronto (TIFF) kicked off. Red carpets, big stars and ditto premieres. It may be slightly less well-known here than Cannes, but TIFF is at least as important. For example, in the run-up to the Oscars. Not a bad thing, then...

Italian grandfather of arthouse cinema

With Michelangelo Antonioni - Il maestro del cinema moderno, EYE has once again managed to put together a flawless and solid film exhibition. George Vermij visited the exhibition on the Italian master filmmaker and looks back on his influential oeuvre. In Dino Risi's road movie Il Sorpasso (1962), the passionate and extroverted Vittorio Gassman takes on a young and reserved Jean-Louis Trintignant...

Woman, man, film - does Cannes have something to make up for?

Tonight, the 67th edition of the Cannes Film Festival opens with Grace of Monaco, a biopic with a major lead role for Nicole Kidman. Jury president of the world's most important film event is New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion. Three of the other six jury members also his women. Does Cannes have something to make up for?

Nymphomaniac Vol. I in Berlin: half an hour longer, still the same film, still just as good
