Minister of Education, Culture and Science Ingrid van Engelshoven spoke today at the invitation of Theatre Festival Boulevard with organisations and individual creators from Brabant about the impact of COVID-19. In the presence of the culture aldermen of the big cities and the new deputy for Leisure, Culture and Sport, the impact of the virus on the performing arts sector was mapped out. AND there was a look ahead. "It is important at this time, when our sector is facing blow after blow, to talk constructively with the minister about the future," said festival director Viktorien van Hulst. "We have to put that puzzle together. It is good that not only the central government, but also the province and municipalities were involved in this today and take responsibility for it now and in the future."
The Verkadefabriek in 's-Hertogenbosch looked at the challenges facing the sector across the performing arts disciplines, from education and talent development to (inter)national excellence. Those involved discussed the impact of the corona measures on students, on producing and (international) performances. Developments at various festivals and venues were also reviewed.
Among the organisations present, the concept of solidarity came up frequently. Solidarity with and responsibility for the field, creators and a wide audience. Especially now, cooperation and inclusiveness are important for the role culture plays in society. Current, mostly digital, initiatives are a nice addition, but can never replace live encounters. Makers and organisations hope that Brabant can maintain a pioneering role in this important function.
The culture aldermen of 's-Hertogenbosch, Eindhoven, Tilburg and Breda gave an insight into issues in their cities. And they shared the demand from creators and organisations to look for opportunities within restrictions and regulations. Commissioner Wil van Pinxteren made his first appearance in his new position during this afternoon. He spoke about the importance of supporting the whole chain. "I am aware of all the cultural developments there have been in Brabant, there is a lot here, I see incredible passion and commitment," he revealed when asked. And he concluded with: "Culture is the cement of society, and I see that this is in danger of falling away. Society desperately needs culture right now."
Above all, it was discussed how Brabant can use its innovative strength and the many partnerships to build the performing arts field of the future after a period of mandatory standstill. Minister van Engelshoven summed up afterwards: "Culture is indeed the cement for the identity of our society, in addition we should not forget the economic stimulus it provides. It is important that the sector does not wait, but presents ideas, keeps pressing on what can be done. We administrators can be bombarded with that. Make sure creativity is used to the full for pilots, for experiments."
