On 11 June 2023, the Holland Festival will host the Dutch premiere of the British 5-star musical theatre production Wuthering Heights at DeLaMar in Amsterdam. One of London's most influential directors, Emma Rice, adapted Emily Brontë's literary masterpiece into a fiery theatrical experience, with live music, humour, puppetry and dance. Wuthering Heights received rave reviews in London and is currently touring the United States.

The co-production of National Theatre and Emma Rice's theatre company Wise Children, at the initiative of Sismo Stories & Performances and in collaboration with DeLaMar, the Holland Festival and Senf Theaterpartners, can be seen only nine times in the Netherlands from Friday 9 to Sunday 18 June 2023. Ticket sales have now started at DeLaMar, and from 14 March tickets will also be available through the Holland Festival.

Wuthering Heights

An epic tale of love, revenge and hope. When young Heathcliff is rescued from the docks of Liverpool, Mr Earnshaw decides to adopt him and house him in his country home Wuthering Heights. Here, Heathcliff finds a kindred spirit in Earnshaw's daughter Catherine and a tempestuous love ignites between the two. But when Heathcliff and Catherine are separated, a relentless series of events unleashes. A breathtaking revenge tragedy that warns that our cruel treatment of others will affect the world for years to come.

"Everyone involved is reaching for the heights in this emotionally epic entertainment." ***** The Times

"A wildly imaginative, exhilarating piece of theatre." *****Daily Mail

Andreas Fleischmann, director DeLaMar:

"I grant every Amsterdammer the vibe of this top production. I am super proud that we can present this 'best of the best' hit production from theatre hallhalla London together with Holland Festival exclusively for a fortnight in DeLaMar."

Emily Ansenk, Holland Festival director:

"Adventurous forms of musical theatre is an area of focus for the Holland Festival. That is why this year we are joining forces with DeLaMar to bring the international production Wuthering Heights by the acclaimed Emma Rice to the Netherlands together. This dazzling, compelling and humorously told performance appeals to a wide audience."

Sismo Stories & Performances

Sismo Stories & Performances is a foundation dedicated to supporting playwrights and creators of innovative theatre, with a social connection. In doing so, they like to look a lot at makers and theatres in the English-speaking world, especially the UK, for inspiration, partly because of the tradition where the writer and the story are focal points for the performances created.

Joachim Fleury, founder and creative director of Sismo Stories & Performances, in collaboration with DeLaMar, wants to bring British productions in that tradition to the Netherlands - and Wuthering Heights is a first, very good example. While the text is of course not new in origin, company Wise Children has given a whole new expression and socially relevant charge to the story.
