Amsterdam, 8 October 2024 - The "Don't let the curtain fall" campaign has successfully collected more than 30,500 expressions of support from loyal audiences. The initiative was launched by 59 members of the NAPK (Dutch Association for Performing Arts), which are in danger of closing down due to the lack of multi-year subsidies.
Campaign results
The signatures were presented on 8 October to the culture spokespersons of several political parties in the Lower House. This expression of support shows the public's strong commitment to preserving the diversity and vibrancy of the Dutch performing arts.
The threat to the Dutch performing arts
From 2025, 59 NAPK members face an uncertain future due to budget shortfalls at the Performing Arts Fund and in the cultural basic infrastructure. This financial crisis threatens as many as 50% of the companies that have received multi-year support in recent years.
The potential loss of these carefully constructed organisations represents not only capital destruction, but also a significant blow to audiences who have built strong ties with these companies.
A call to action
The affected companies are calling on politicians to prevent the curtain falling on these vital cultural institutions. To ensure that Dutch audiences can continue to enjoy their work, an additional budget of €10 million a year is needed.
