In various studios around the country, for almost a year, many boys took dance classes at the Billy Elliot sCOOL to qualify for one of the most coveted roles on the dance stage: Billy Elliot. Eventually, these participants were brought together for lessons at Stage Entertainment's beautiful new building at Zuidas in Amsterdam. Under the watchful eye of admirer Joop van den Ende, six young dancers were eventually selected by professionals from England, among others. Vanafrom 4 November in Scheveningen in the compelling ballet musical Billy Elliot with music by Elton John.
Billy Elliot is also a bit of a pet project from Van den Ende himself, who once took dance lessons as a young boy. But he frankly admits, he was nowhere near the level of the Billy Elliot boys. Hardly anyone, for that matter. It is high artistry, twisting and jumping and also singing and acting. Expectations are therefore high. Does this version match that of the famed West End and are the Dutch dancers good enough? With Svenno, Jillis, Tydo, Stijn, Roan and Carlos are sure to shed some tears with the audience. Engaging, bright, dreamy, down-to-earth, unexpected, nonchalant, they all have their own characteristics. Before the summer, I taught these kids for a while and remarkably, I missed them afterwards. I won't be the only one in the coming period.
