Wendell Jaspers and Lotte Dunselman shine in (tentative) last by Madeleine Matzer

Quantum entanglement, supersymmetry. The nerd in me could not get around the mystery of cosmic twins, which hundreds of billions of light years apart yet simultaneously take over each other's state when one of them is seen. Or something like that. In Blood Sister, Matzer's latest play, it's not billions of parsecs, it's an Atlantic Ocean and 17 years of life that those two identical sisters...

'The Stone in my Mouth' offers perfect combo of talents in staggering war story

Riet, Peer Wittenbols' mother, has been dead for a few years. She took a lot of stories with her in her grave from the time she was called Marietje. Playwright Peer Wittenbols sought out those stories, actress Juul Vrijdag tells them. And so for an hour and a half I witnessed a small miracle, because Marietje was alive again. And so did Riet. It...

'Broos' impressively exposes frustrations in intensive care setting

'Broos' opens as a kind of cruel game show, with lead actress Lottie Hellingman in the middle of the stage, sitting on a chair above which hangs a large, grey rock. "I took happiness for granted," she begins resignedly. Hellingman's words are by director Madeleine Matzer. She wrote them down for 'Broos' after hearing a mother of a 17-year-old daughter with Down syndrome say

Midshipman hit by a snip. SMART by Matzer learns what driving apps are doing

Which sentence stuck with us? The question to the audience comes from Madeleine Matzer after the performance of 'Smart'. It is a rather loaded question, as the play is about very direct loss. When a child has just died in a stupid accident, every sentence you remember is worth gold. The blunt accident that the subject...

Matzer brings SMART - an unguarded moment that changes everything

A day like any other. Simply, on the road. To work. Going home. You know it. You know the road, the car, it's quiet. No oncoming traffic, virtually no side roads... You relax behind your dashboard. One of those days, then, like all kinds of others. Until that message, that moment... that changes everything. For her and for him and above all: forever. SMART is a...
